Welcome
Taia River Retreat is an A-frame cabin set in the middle of nature at Cheile Tăii (the Taia Gorges), just a few kilometres from the town of Petrila. Its steep roof, warm wood and large window onto the forest make it the perfect escape from the city.
Spend the day on the trails, through the gorge or up into the Parâng and Șureanu mountains, then come back to the warmth of the cabin with the sound of the river in the background.

The cabin
An A-frame cabin on two levels: the living room downstairs and the bedroom upstairs, under the steep roof.

Gorges, caves, ski slopes, mining history and some of the most beautiful roads in Romania.
A protected nature reserve where the Taia stream cuts through white and grey limestone walls. The path follows the water over metal footbridges, past springs flowing straight out of the rock, small grottos and climbing routes of several grades.
A hillside in the Taia valley where half the forest was replanted with spruce about 50 years ago while the other half kept its beech and oak. In autumn the hill splits into a sharp line of green and rust – locals also call it the “Mountain of the Heart”.
The former coal mine, closed in 2015, is now a listed historic monument and cultural venue. Expect guided routes through the industrial buildings, the Mine Rescue Museum, concerts and festivals – the story told in the documentary “Planeta Petrila”.

Location
The cabin sits in the Taia river valley at the entrance to Cheile Tăii, a few kilometres from the centre of Petrila (Hunedoara County, Romania). Access is via the forest road that follows the Taia valley.
